The melody of Laoidh Chaluim Chille is a very ancient Gaelic air which local legend attributes to Saint Columba (Chaluim Chille), a 6th century Irish priest credited with bringing Christianity to Scotland.Gaelic Lyrics
Columba was a Gaelic prince of royal blood and from accounts of his life emerges as a combination of meek saint and Celtic warrior. He founded a monastic community on the remote Scottish island of Iona, a site considered sacred long before the dawn of Christianity, and it was upon arriving safelyon the shores of Iona after hazardous journey by boat that he supposedly sang "Laoidh Chaluim Chille". Legends around about Columba's miraculous powers, especially over animals, and his life continues to fascinate scholars to this day.
